Alabama Election Particularities

Alabama, known as the Yellowhammer State, has a bicameral legislature. That means that it has both a State Senate and a State House of Representatives. The State Senate has 35 elected members, and The Alabama House of Representatives consists of 105 members. All state senators and representatives serve a four-year term. The governor is also elected to terms of four years at a time, and is limited to a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Alabamans vote directly for a wide range of local officials and services such as school board members and certain public services such as fire protection and water management.

Party Primaries in Alabama

All registered voters in Alabama are able to vote in Alabama primaries for all political parties. That means that even if a voter is a registered Democrat, they can vote in the Republican primary in Alabama.

Unlike some other states, Alabama’s elections – even at the local level – are partisan elections, which means that candidates all declare their party affiliation when they run. Judges, district attorneys, Sheriffs, and other local officials are elected in Alabama, rather than appointed.

Registration, Absentee Voting, and Mail in ballots.

Alabama does not have same-day registration, so voters must register in advance in order to vote in Alabama state or local elections. That said, Alabama offers an extended early voting period of 29 days. Alabama allows voters to cast an absentee ballot by mail for any reason or with no reason.

Political Direct Mail Strategies for Alabama Elections

Alabama’s system lends itself to several important tactical considerations when putting together your direct mail plan.

Because Alabama has a partisan system that allows all voters to vote in every party primary, party affiliation is one of the most important and also one of the simplest ways to segment voters. In every Republican primary, Democrat and independent voters can be a significant source of votes, and vice versa.

Another opportunity presented by the particularities of Alabama’s ballot initiative system is the opportunity to mobilize voters who are passionate about a ballot initiative to vote for your candidate once they are already at the polls.

By aligning your candidate with a ballot initiative, you can mobilize supporters who would otherwise not be passionate about supporting your candidate, and would maybe stay home.

Because same-day registration is not available, direct mail is a powerful way to get voters mobilized for registration and/or encourage mail-in balloting.
